Things to do near River Woods Retreat

Here's what our guests enjoy most, with drive times from the cabin.

Tuscarora Trail, from the door

The Tuscarora Trail parking area is a 15-minute walk or a 3-minute drive, and a 2.5-mile hike from the cabin reaches the top of Massanutten Mountain. See our Tuscarora Trail page for the hike.

Shenandoah River State Park

About 11 minutes away: riverside trails, a car-top boat launch and Cullers Overlook at sunset. See our Shenandoah River State Park page.

Shenandoah National Park

The Front Royal entrance to Skyline Drive is about 25 minutes away, and the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center about 30. See our Shenandoah National Park page for hikes.

On the river

The neighborhood's river access point is a 10-minute walk from the cabin. Float to it from the Bentonville boat ramp with your own tubes or kayaks, or book a trip with Downriver Canoe Company in Bentonville (8 min).

Caverns

Skyline Caverns in Front Royal (19 min) and Luray Caverns, the largest in Virginia (28 min).

Front Royal

Main Street shops and restaurants (25 min).

Wineries and breweries

Castle Vineyards (21 min, our favorite for sunset), Wisteria Farm and Vineyard (37 min) and Pen Druid Brewing in Sperryville (50 min).

Adventure

Bear Mountain Ziplines (29 min), Shenandoah Valley Axe Throwing Co. in Front Royal (24 min, live music most Friday and Saturday nights) and guided trail rides at Fort Valley Ranch (45 min).

Where to eat

In Front Royal (about 25 min): Osteria Maria (our favorite), Element, Khukuri and C&C Frozen Treats. In Luray (about 27 min): Circa '31 at the Mimslyn Inn, The Speakeasy, Gathering Grounds Café, Broad Porch Coffee Co., Il Vesuvio, Dominico's Italian and Flotzies soft-serve (March to October). Worth the drive: Three Blacksmiths in Sperryville (47 min, book months ahead). Some kitchens close Monday and Tuesday in winter.

We don't get anything for these recommendations. They're just places we and past guests like.
