Shenandoah National Park

River Woods Retreat is about 25 minutes from the Front Royal entrance, where Skyline Drive begins, and about 30 minutes from the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center.

Hikes we recommend

• Fox Hollow Trail: a short loop from the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center past old homestead sites.
• Compton Peak: a 2.4-mile out-and-back with views and columnar basalt formations.
• Overall Run Falls: the park's tallest waterfall (93 feet).
• The Appalachian Trail crosses Skyline Drive at many points.

Tips: bring water and a day pack, and hide valuables when you park at a trailhead. The park charges an entrance fee per vehicle.

Driving electric? Charge overnight on the cabin's Level 2 charger and start Skyline Drive with a full battery.

Back at the cabin: soak in the 460-gallon hot tub after your hike. The cabin sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms.
